How to Find the Best Used Auto Parts for Your Car, Truck, or SUV

Blog

When you need to buy parts for your vehicle but are on a tight budget or just want to save some money, buying used auto parts is an excellent option. However, there are some things you should know about searching for used auto parts that can save you money and help you find the best parts for your vehicle.

Salvage Yards

When you are looking for used auto parts, the first place to try is a local salvage yard, but if you can find one that allows you to remove the parts from the donor car yourself, you should start there. Used auto parts come in varying conditions, so going into the yard and looking at the vehicles to determine which one's parts are in the best condition is helpful.

Often you can find the parts you need on several cars or trucks, so look over each vehicle and its parts to find the newest and cleanest parts available. Check the mileage on the car to determine the age or amount of use the vehicle had gone through before the owner scrapped it. A vehicle that was damaged in a crash but which also had very low mileage often will possess some of the best available used auto parts, so long as you can avoid the crash damage. Younger or less-used cars will have parts in better condition, so they should last you longer than parts from older cars.

Examining and harvesting the parts yourself may make your search a little more time-consuming, but in the end, you can get a great deal and parts that will likely be newer than used parts you would otherwise get.

Buying Private Sale Parts

Another option you may want to consider is purchasing parts from classified or online listings or local advertisements. This can work out well because some people hold on to used or even new parts and then resell them once they determine they do not need them.

Doing this will allow you to buy the parts directly and get a good deal on them. But buying parts this way often means you will not get a guarantee on their lifespan, so go and visit the seller in person and look over the parts carefully before purchasing them.

This can a good option especially if you are looking for rare or old parts that no longer exist in the local salvage yard. Buying used auto parts this way can take longer because you have to search for them. But sometimes you can't get the parts any other way. Even if you can, it is a viable option to consider, and you may find used car parts in excellent condition for a low price.
