What To Know About Maintaining Your Electric Golf Cart Batteries

Blog

Do you own a golf cart that runs off batteries and are you not sure what you should be doing to maintain them? One thing that should be done is to fill the batteries with water. Here is what you need to know about this important part of battery maintenance.

Know Why Refilling The Water Is Important

Not sure why a battery even needs water? Inside the battery are plates that are covered with a special material that helps the battery maintain its charge. The plates need to be completely submerged in water or else the material on those plates will become dry and flake off. This causes the lifespan of the battery to significantly reduce, which will mean you get less runtime out of your battery between recharges and cause the need for premature replacement.

How To Access The Batteries

The batteries for your golf cart are going to be located underneath the seat, and there will be several batteries inside. You'll want to completely take the seat off the golf cars so that you have access to the batteries without the seat being in the way.

Know About Safety

Many people are afraid to maintain a golf cart battery because they are afraid that they are going to be shocked. As long as your hands are dry, you are not going to get shocked, so there is nothing to be afraid of. That said, it's still a good idea to wear rubber gloves and safety glasses to make sure that you are protected if something does go wrong.

Use The Right Water

You'll want to refill the batteries with distilled water so that there are no impurities in it. If you do not have distilled water, know that tap water is still better than not refilling the water at all. However, use distilled water if you are able to help prolong the life of your batteries.

Remove The Battery Cap And Read The Gauge

The battery will have a cap that lifts right off and allows you to fill it up with more water. When you remove the battery cap, you can actually see inside of the battery where there is a water gauge. This tells you where the water level should be so that you do not put too much water into the battery.

Fill Each Battery Cell

There are going to be multiple holes for water, which is for each battery cell. You'll need to put water into all the holes for each battery cell. If you only refill one, you will not be doing the job properly.

If you have neglected the maintenance of your batteries, you may need to replace the batteries with brand-new ones. Contact a supplier of golf cart batteries to learn more.
